St. Regis Bermuda

Modernity And History Side By Side

This new luxury hotel adds to our legacy on the island where our design story began. Written into the history books as the architectural firm that created the Bermudian design vernacular, it seemed natural that St. Regis would seek out our expertise to bring authenticity to their vision for a new property in Bermuda. This was not just hotel design alone, but a master plan involving the developer, community, and government. In that sense, we orchestrated each element with finesse to achieve a successful, modern design.

We’re at our best when facing unique challenges like finding ourselves planning a place that was a UNESCO World Heritage Site, had a road in the entirely wrong place on prime oceanfront, and a small horseshoe-shaped site to accommodate a luxury hotel. Privacy and luxury don’t meld well with foot and road traffic, so our relationship with local government and a deep understanding of local codes resulted in our negotiating for a move of the road. It went to the back providing access to the museum and beach while cohabiting and preserving the UNESCO site. What we did was actually enhance the public access to the beach and connection with St. Catherine’s. Now the hotel sits comfortably on Achilles Bay anchored by Fort St. Catherine and Fort Albert delighting guests and supporting a happy local community. Geometric lines in our design punctuate the presence of the forts.

It’s part of our unique skill set that we can create long term important connections in the right places, with respect and collaboration. This is what opens dialogue and gets the answer yes when there could well be a no; local knowledge and relationships count. It also manifests itself in our application of the Bermuda design vernacular that we applied to this modern luxury hotel, and was the mechanism to connect the structure to place.

The result is a look and feel of the heritage limestone but with materials that are modern, employed in the insulated roofs, but engendering something more timeless that connect in homage to the story of Bermuda. Water collection, airtight buildings, hurricane proofing with sacrificial overhangs, and designing the structures well above required sea level requirements, all carefully designed for future-proofing and sustainability.

We’re always proud when our innovative approach to design can improve a property’s operational efficiency. Our expertise in delivering experientially memorable journeys and financially successful designs for our clients supports them in providing on-brand experiences for their guests at which working practices can take place unseen and with speed.

Working with a brand like St. Regis we are conscious of their brand’s reputation, one synonymous with modern glamour and sophistication, and like us, they have uncompromising attention to detail and a commitment to excellence. In this instance, history and modernity partner seamlessly, providing a place to ignite the spirit once again in Bermuda.

Inspired by Bermuda’s natural ecosystems, we designed interior spaces that convey all the elegance of an urban St. Regis location, while bringing elements of the beach inside. Colors mix boldly and playfully, as in the world of fashion design. Taking a biophilic approach, our designers introduced hints of vivid tropical hues to the otherwise cool, neutral rooms. Sea green tiles make a statement in the Drawing Room’s fireplace, a theme that continues in the residential bathrooms’ showers and countertops as a nod to the Caribbean waters outside. In the Great Hall, we lightened the formality of white columns and rich wood beams with hot pink throw cushions and green carpeting that mimics the verdant gardens.
