Fairmont Tazi Palace
Palatial Splendour
Having completely revolutionised the idea of palatial hospitality in Marrakech, it was a delight for us to be invited into the mystery and intrigue of reinventing the Tazi Palace on the outskirts of Tangier. Originally built by one of the King’s advisors in the 1920’s, but then abandoned, it was awaiting a magic design spell to awaken it from sleep. This was for us an opportunity to exploit our design imaginations and create something that would inspire new visitors to Tangiers as a destination, and simultaneously celebrate the rich history and culture of Morocco.

Challenge is the catalyst for excellence, so a site including an existing historical palace, a steep terrain, and an awkward arrival, formed an opportunity to deliver innovative design solutions to something potentially difficult. The palace itself was neglected and unloved, pushed up against the boundaries of the site. It was however set on the crest of a hill, so our design leant itself to a tiered approach maximising the views out to the city and Mediterranean while complementing and preserving the existing structure.
The guest arrival journey had no choice but to come from the side, so our tiered design approach solved the parking underneath and provided an elegant solution for a small space. It was essential for us to preserve and re-purpose the existing buildings not only to show care but also to not lose the essence of what was. Satisfaction for us comes in solving all the puzzles completely as we did here.
The lower-level hotel rooms will open out into the gardens which will be spectacular. Not overly manicured, but letting the structures rest on the hillside in naturally verdant surroundings that complement the views.
The mystery of North Africa that inspired classic films like Casablanca and the snippets of fact and myth about the Palace’s past fuelled the creative storytelling of our designers.
Working with local architects was an opportunity to demonstrate our sensitivity to local relationships, and to ensure we were connected at a deep level to culture and knowledge. Palaces are beautiful to look at but they need a contemporary perspective to deliver the modern infrastructure that supports the luxury experience requirement while keeping the historical integrity.
Flawless service functionality is brought about specifically by design, applied to the connection between its originating point and the recipient guests. It’s an essential element of what we do in hospitality design.
Known for our collaboration and passion for realising vision, working to deliver a plan consummate with the Raffles brand was in sync with our values and design DNA. They expect unique, undefinable, and exquisite, which sums up what this design is. It will become a destination in its own right attracting new visitors, contributing to the local economy and community, while firmly placing Tangier and the Tazi Palace as must-go-to destinations on the discerning travellers list.
