City Council gives green light to five-star establishments and 550 rooms and great luxury and 170 rooms

Gran Canaria will expand its lodging offer with two more high quality hotels. The City of San Bartolomé de Tirajana yesterday approved the building licenses for the two hotels that the tourist company Seaside Hotels, which is chaired by the German businessman Theo Gerlach, plans to lift on its land located in Sector 5A of Pasito Blanco. The permits arrive three and a half years after the company requested authorization in 2016 to develop its projects and after more than a decade halted in the town hall.

The Local Government Board has given the green light to two OBMI-designed urban development projects that will revolutionize the housing offer of San Bartolomé de Tirajana since they will not only increase the number of tourist beds but are aimed at a public with high purchasing power. It is, on the one hand, a five-star hotel with 550 rooms and 1,100 beds that will be built on the A and D plots of Pasito Blanco and will have a maximum of three floors of heights.

On the other hand, the tourist company will build a luxury hotel complex of 170 rooms and 340 beds with a maximum of four floors high. Both establishments will be developed in the 160,000 square meters that Seaside Hotels has in Pasito Blanco and in them the German company plans to invest an amount that amounts to 180 million euros.

These urban projects will become the first hotel establishments to be built in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana in the last decade, since the last one to rise in the tourist town was the Hotel Baobab de Lopesan in 2009.

The project spokesman expressed its satisfaction yesterday after obtaining the license for the projects. "We assume it with enthusiasm and desire to move forward with the hotels after many years of fighting to obtain permits," Seaside authorized voices said yesterday in statements to this newspaper. With this, the company hopes "to contribute to the improvement of the destination, the growth of the economy and the creation of employment".

Seaside Hotels expects to begin the work of the first hotel, the five-star hotel, during the first half of 2020 and once the work is finished or advanced, begin with the luxury hotel. From the City Council, the Town Planning Councilor, Alejandro Marichal, explained yesterday that "it ends 10 years of absolute paralysis in the construction of new hotel plans."

"It is a firm commitment to the requalification of our housing offer, and in this way increase the arrival of tourists with greater purchasing power," he said. With this new authorization Gran Canaria will have the third 5-star luxury hotel next to the Grand Hotel Residence de Seaside in Maspalomas and the Santa Catalina Hotel in the capital of Gran Canaria, which has acquired the category after its renovation.
